What should dealers keep in mind when they have new players? “As a dealer, you have to be like a chameleon at the table. Everyone wants a different experience. Lots of cheers and celebrations.” Some want one noisy table, others prefer a more conversational and quieter experience, and a good reseller can identify, adapt and deliver the experience customers are looking for.
How did you get this job? “Like most people who work in casinos, I got into this profession purely by accident. I went to college in Iowa and played a little poker on the weekends at the local casino. Like many students, I took aimless part-time jobs in bars to pay for my studies, and I didn’t particularly enjoy the work, and I didn’t get any benefit out of it. When I checked the comp points on my player card online, I learned that the casino was looking for a part-time dealer job, so I thought, “I can do this,” and applied. The interview went well and they offered to train me in blackjack, craps and roulette. The training program was very flexible to fit my class and I enjoyed it. The rest is history.

Have you always dreamed of working in the hospitality industry? I was interested in things, and I loved tinkering with cars, electronics, and computers.It wasn’t until I got involved in the casino business that I fell in love with the world of casinos. Few industries can offer people, departments, and careers in a fun, fast-paced, and highly rewarding environment that few other careers can match.
Are you from Colorado? How did you come to Monarch Casino? “I am far from being from Colorado. I was born in Ukraine and my family immigrated to the United States in the late 90s. “It’s been 10 years. When I was in college, I came to Colorado for school to visit a friend who fell in love in Colorado. In 2010, the gambling limit was increased from $5 to $100. and when casinos allowed games like craps and roulette, I saw an opportunity and moved in. When Monarch announced plans for renovations, expansions and a hotel, I was very intrigued and I spoke to a few people I knew in the industry and saw the vision this business had for this market as well as its real estate.I joined the organization in 2014 as a shift manager for a casino and started a garage implosion. , renovations and hotel extensions.In 2016, I had the opportunity to assume the role of leader of the table games division.
What are your work strengths? “My work strengths are the team and the guests. We are in the entertainment industry, so the people we work with are definitely a highlight. My team has grown from 65 to about 250. That’s the main reason I look forward to going to work every day.Someone goes from knowing nothing about table games to being a dealer. It’s been really rewarding to go through training, step foot on the table for the first time, and then grow and develop into one of the top dealers in the division within a few years. It motivates me and the rest of the management team to help them develop and grow.”
And what about guests? “Guests are another strength of the piece. We get to meet people from all walks of life. The exchanges and friendships over the years have been invaluable and have really made me a better person.

Do you have an interesting story to share? “In my 20 years of playing, I have seen guests making small, life-changing bets, losing loved ones to long-time gamblers, and having their birthdays hit the roulette wheel.
