In Prague, Czech Republic, James Bond tracks down the head of MI6, Dryden, who has been selling secrets to enemies for profit. They discuss what it takes to be a double-A agent (one requirement makes two murders) and Bond casually tells Dryden that his spy contact, Fisher, is dead, and “is not well”. Interspersed with the dialogue are black and white scenes of Bond and Dryden’s communication struggles in the men’s room. Finally Bond shoves the man’s face into the sink and holds him there until he falls to the floor, seemingly dead. Dryden points a gun at Bond. “Shame, it’s hard to recognize each other.” He pulls the trigger, but James has taken the bullet out of the weapon. “I know where you keep your gun. I think it’s something.” Dryden continued to taunt Bond, asking him if he felt remorse or guilt for killing Fisher. Bond remains silent, his face invisible. Dryden says that Bond “doesn’t need to worry, the rest is-” at which point Bond kills Dryden. Bond put down his pistol and said, “Yes, often.” (Though not explicitly stated, Bond finds Dryden’s murder, his second such murder, “relatively” easier than the first.) By retreating, Fisher avoids Bond’s attempt to drown him and takes his pistol. The frame immediately transitions to the iconic “gun” sequence. Bond turns around and shoots someone. Blood flows down the frame, marking the opening headers.
The scene moves to Uganda, where a terrorist group known as the Lord’s Resistance Army meets Lee Shaffer, a private banker for terrorist groups around the world. The broker of the plan is Mr. White, who invests his own money and operates stocks to earn a 100 percent return on investment. The Lord’s Resistance Army, represented by one man, Satyun Obno, has agreed to allow the money to be loaned to Le Chefre for his nefarious purposes.
In Madagascar, Bond works with another MI6 agent, Carter, to track down a terrorist, Molaka, who is betting on a fight between a cobra and a mongoose. Carter, who is invincible, is revealed to receive a call from Molaka and a bolt from the terror site. Bond follows Molaka, an experienced “free runner”, who leads Bond through a construction site through several canyons and eventually to the Nambuto embassy where he seeks asylum. In direct violation of international law and his orders, Bond charges into the embassy, and arrests Mulacca. Bond fights his way through the halls of the embassy and finds himself surrounded by armed guards. The ambassador appears and orders Bond to release Molaka. Bond escapes by shooting Molaka and a nearby gas tank explodes. He also stole Molaka’s purse. When he searches the back, he finds a cell phone and a bomb. Bond briefly examines the man’s messages, noticing one with an American phone number and the word “ellipsis”. Bond holds the phone.
Casino Royale (2006): The Movie That Restarted The Bond Franchise
Back at MI6, M is furious that 007’s violent actions were caught on tape at the Nimbus embassy. Bond later sneaks into MG’s house and hacks his high-level warrant so he can find out where the cell phone came from. He is shocked when M walks in and teaches him proper protocol and manners. He felt it was a mistake to give him a grade of 00. Bond assured him that “the life expectancy of a 00 is short, so your mistakes will be short.” M tells him that “arrogance and self-awareness sometimes go hand in hand” and asks him to take his ego out of the equation while on a mission. He also tells her to go on a short vacation until she decides how best to deal with him. As Bond leaves, M tells Bond not to enter his house again (which he will do again in Skyfall).
Bond discovers that Molaka received a call in the Bahamas, so he goes there to investigate who called and why. He hired a mediator, Alex Dimitrios, who was working for Le Chiffre and was hired to find someone who could do the job for Le Chiffre. Bond meets Dimitris and plays poker with him, winning his Aston Martin DB5 in the process. Bond uses Aston to break up a romantic evening with Dimitris’s aggressive wife, Soling, in order to get information about her husband. He tells Bond that Dimitris is going to Miami.
Bond follows him there where he confronts Dimitrios, after seeing him leave a bag for someone to pick up. Bond kills Demetrius while tied up with a knife. However, the bag is lost and Bond follows the man, Carlos Nikolic, who was hired by Molaka for the job. Bond follows Carlos to Miami International Airport, where he takes a security uniform from a bag and puts it on. She enters the airport’s secure area and Bond follows her, having discovered that “Ellipsis” is the security code to enter the gate. M calls Bond to tell him that Le Chefre is going to order Carlos to destroy the prototype of a large airline called Skyfleet. The model is the largest passenger plane in the world and destroying it would destroy Skyfleet Aeronautics. Carlos shuts down the building’s emergency sprinkler system to cause confusion, forcing everyone out of the airport and out into Turkey. Carlos attaches an explosive charge to a fuel truck disguised as a key and starts driving it towards the ship. However, Bond manages to jump into the tank. The two have a heated battle near the runway while being chased by Miami-Dade police. Finally, Carlos closes the truck, and Bond is unable to stop the truck from crashing into the plane. Carlos smiles as Bond is arrested and charged. However, Bond had discovered Carlos’ small explosive device and attached it to Carlos’ belt, and Carlos accidentally killed himself.
Back in Nassau, Bond discovers that Solange has been murdered, while MI6 finds her body submerged in the net of a fishing boat. M explains that he was tortured and killed by Lee Chaffery because he was the only one alive and thought he could talk. Lee Chaffery’s plan was to “sell” hundreds of millions of dollars in Sky Fleet stock and, in ruining their image, cause their stock to plummet and send them into bankruptcy. Thanks to the bailout, Lee Shaffer lost more than $101 million. Now a marked man, Lee Chaffrey must find another way to get his money back so his investors can’t kill him. He arranged a high-stakes match for ten Montenegrin players, each with an entry fee of $10 million plus $5 million back if they lost all their money. M informs Bond about a poker game at Casino Royale, located in Montenegro, and convinces Bond to continue the mission because he is the best poker player in the service. M also implants a home device in Bond’s left hand so he can track him anywhere.
