Soon after, a SMERSH agent enters and executes Le Chiffre and two of his men by shooting them in the head. The agent spares Bond’s life because he didn’t get the order to kill him, then tells him about SMERSH’s ideals: they’re only known to be merciful by accident or mistake (both were done on the same day as James Bond), then cuts “SH” (Russian / Cyrillic symbol associated with spies) in Bond’s left hand so that any future SMERSH agent he might meet could identify him. Delirious, exhausted and in great pain, Bond collapsed immediately afterwards.
Two days later, Bond regains consciousness and Vesper nurses him back to health. While in the hospital, Bond contemplates his future as a spy. Three weeks later, they go on vacation, where Bond becomes romantically involved with Vesper. They spend their holidays in a French seaside inn. They begin a passionate relationship, and Bond decides he will ask Vesper to marry him.
Vesper soon realizes that their movements were monitored by a SMERSH agent under the guise of Adolf Gettler. Vesper becomes more and more scared and paranoid of this man as he passes by from time to time. Bond overhears Vesper secretly making phone calls and acting deceitfully. Bond is upset and their relationship becomes strained. This comes to a head when Bond demands that his secret be revealed. She promises to tell him the next day. They make passionate love and Bond retires to his bedroom. Finally, unable to deal with the guilt, Vesper deliberately overdoses on sleeping pills that night in order to kill himself.
In the morning, Bond finds a letter from Vesper explaining that she worked for MWD to free her boyfriend, who was in the Polish Royal Air Force. She also nearly sabotaged the casino operation by not getting in between the shooter. She then tells Bond that she has begun to fall in love with Bond, and this angered SMERSH, who sent an agent to follow Vesper and Bond. Vesper also said that she wanted to run away to South America, start a new life with Bond, and have a child with him. She then ends the letter with “My love, my love.”

Due to Vesper’s lies and carving the letter “Sh” into his right arm, Bond decides to turn against SMERSH, which sets the rest of the series in motion. The novel then ends with Bond telling his communications officer that “the dog is dead”.
Casino Royale was the first James Bond novel adapted as a daily comic strip, published in the Daily Express newspaper and distributed worldwide. It ran from July 7, 1958 to December 13, 1958 and was written by Anthony Hearn and illustrated by John McCluskey. All of the tapes lack the familiar “JAMES BOND” name in the upper left corner, which was used in all subsequent adventures.
To help the Daily Express illustrate James Bond, Ian Fleming commissioned an artist to create a sketch of what he thought James Bond looked like.
