(2003) gives us two memorable games of Texas Hold’em Poker. At the beginning of the story, Bond plays Alex Dimitrios at the One & Only Ocean Club in Nassau, Bahamas. After Dimitrios put his DB5 into a hand of three kings, Bond defeated him with three aces and cruised to victory with Solange in the passenger seat.
Later, we travel to Hotel Splendide, Montenegro for the most iconic sequence in Bond history. Here private banker Le Chiffre plays a game of Texas hold’em poker to get his investor’s money back, and both Bond and the CIA’s Felix Leiter are in danger of stopping him. The epic game takes many surprising turns but ultimately leads to Bond’s victory over Le Chiffre in the final hand.
The poker lessons of producer Michael G. Wilson and the cast and crew helped the writers develop the ending of the card game: Neal Purvis was inspired by one such moment when he lost the same hand that Bond caught on screen.
“The card game was probably the hardest scene I ever shot,” recalls director Martin Campbell. “It’s one thing to play a game of chemin de fer or 21, that’s much easier. If you play Texas hold’em poker with ten players around the table, that’s difficult because it’s also a complicated game, with ten players all looking at each other. It is very difficult to make a film. “

They believed that the card game made for better drama: it was well known, required more skill, and had higher stakes. But to Campbell, who had never taken the deck, it felt like a snooze.

He made mistakes, but he looked good (if injured) making them. He was the perfect type of character to engage in a tense game of poker. Still, Campbell thought, how could he make this play sound so crude?

“It was hard to figure out how to keep the audience engaged in those card games,” says film editor Stuart Baird. “Everyone was really worried that people would get bored with it.”
Campbell snapped. The nearly 30-minute casino sequence plays like a brilliant microcosm of the film: it has its own narrative arc, interspersed with punctuation and deadly shocks, and showcases Bond’s mental strength and mortality. More importantly, it proved that Craig can entertain a daredevil and improve the martini shot, and he used his skills to become one of the greatest poker figures in film history. “I think the sequence was very compelling,” Campbell said. “What you notice is that it’s not just card games, it’s pins. And the two boys make eye contact, actually. That was a secret.”
. He had to understand the game at a molecular level and depended on veteran pro Michael G. Wilson, who also served as an informal poker mentor, to teach him the ins and outs.
Some advice was needed. While on the set, Baird recalled how Donner had chosen to film Mel Gibson and how it created tension.
