Singapore recently opened the Marina Bay Sands Hotel and there are shops and a casino in the area. Coming from Las Vegas, they brought the concept here and I must say I felt like I was no longer on the island of Singapore. Even restaurants and casinos come from Las Vegas. After eating a delicious steak at a newly opened restaurant called Cut (which I will write about tomorrow), a dear friend of mine took me to Singapore to see the casino. We were standing on the third floor balcony overlooking 500 tables. The feeling I had before is different.
The first time you see it, you are simply stunned and angry. It’s all a giant space of curves and lights. For a few seconds I could not understand what I was seeing until my senses calmed down. Then you see. Suddenly it seems so. Underneath all the curved lights in the middle of this large enclosed area that somehow reminds me of futuristic behavior are hundreds and hundreds of tables. If you look closely, you will see that they are covered in green or blue and the cards are decorated. It really looks like behavior. I feel like I am part of a science fiction movie. Yellow lamps and curved walls give it a strange glow.
After your eyes adjust to the sight, your ears suddenly become aware of a humming sound that gently vibrates and vibrates in the air. It doesn’t sound like pachinkos in Japan, but instead the sound is like a monotonous “E” that hums and rings softly. It rings and for some reason I feel it pass me by. It is an eerie silence mixed with the sound of slot machines and people’s blackjack that makes this “E” even. Maybe it’s because I’m standing tall, where the sounds blend together and have some sort of delayed effect, but it still feels weird.
We take pictures, but at the slightest hint of using a flash, a security man appears in a black suit with something attached to his ear and asks us not to take pictures. It goes as fast as it seems and we go home.
