The wheel is divided into a number of equal parts separated by spokes or pins. Each segment is associated with a number. The wheel is spun by a dealer and the winning segment is indicated by a pointer mounted on a flexible piece of rubber or leather which also rubs against the pins to provide friction and slow the wheel. If the player stops the wheel, the segment at the top is the winner.
There are a number of variants of the game which divide the wheel into different numbers of segments, use different symbols in the segments and have different odds if a symbol is selected.
This variant is the most common in casinos in the United States. The symbols are $1, $2, $5, $10 and $20 bills – and two special symbols, a joker and the casino logo. The $1 bills are paid at odds of 1 to 1, the $2 bills at 2 to 1, the $5 bills at 5 to 1, and so on. Wild and logo pay at odds of 40 to 1 or 45 to 1, depending on local game rules or casino practice.
The house edge or edge (the percentage of bets the casino expects to win on average) for this game is one of the highest of most casino games. In the US, it ranges from 11.1% on the $1 picture bet to more than 24% on the joker or logo (which pays 40 to 1). In Australia the house edge is 7.69% on all bets, so the payouts on a 52 segment wheel are 47:1, 23:1, 11:1, 5:1, 3:1 and 1:1.

The symbols on the wheel represent some of the 216 possible combinations of three dice. Sometimes the same combination appears in more than one segment. Players bet on the numbers 1 to 6. If the number appears on one of the dice in the winning segment, the dealer pays 1 to 1; on two of the dice, 2 to 1; on all three dice, 3 to 1.
An example of a dice wheel, made by H. C. Evans & Co. in Chicago (or its successor), is divided into 54 segments. Each of the triples appears four times. The following doubles appear four times each: 2, 1, 1; 2, 2, 1; 4, 3, 3; 5, 4, 4; 6, 5, 5; and 6, 6, 3. The following combinations appear three times each: 3, 2, 1; and 6, 5, 4.
In the example above, there are 54 possible outcomes for a single spin of the wheel. For a specific number:

At odds of 1 to 1, 2 to 1 and 3 to 1 respectively for each of these types of outcomes, the expected loss as a percentage of the bet is:

The symbolism of the game is chuck-a-luck or sic bo, games of chance played with three dice. However, the house edge or edge is greater than chuck-a-luck, which itself has a higher house edge than other casino games.
This variant is rarely seen in casinos, but is often seen as a carnival game or at a charity “Monte Carlo night” fundraiser. A similar game, the “Big Nine” wheel, has five numbers on each segment, and also three special symbols which appear on three fields each, giving 10:1 odds.
A legal game in a licensed casino in the UK, Australia or New Zealand involves a wheel at least 1.5 meters in diameter divided into 52 segments, each marked with one of seven symbols (called A to G). The table below indicates the frequency of the symbols, their probability, the indicated associated odds and the house edge or advantage.
A variant called the “Mississippi Derby” was used for a short time at the Grand Casino in Gulfport, Mississippi. (The casino was destroyed in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina.) The symbols were combinations of three of a variety of horses, arranged to represent a winner, a second-place horse, and a third-place horse. (The horses were recreated in three concentric rings, with the winner on the outer ring.) Players bet on specific horses to “win,” “place,” or “show,” as with horse racing. The payout varied from horse to horse, depending on how many times and where the horse appeared in the rings. The odds ranged from 40 to 1 for the “long shot” to win, down to 1-2 for the “favorite” to show. Roulette is a casino game named after the word Frch meaning small wheel, probably developed from the Italian game Biribi. In the game, a player can choose to place a bet on a single number, various groupings of numbers, the color red or black, whether the number is odd or even, or whether the numbers are high (19–36) or low (1–18) .

To determine the winning number, a croupier spins a wheel in one direction, it spins a ball in the opposite direction around an inclined circular track that runs around the outer edge of the wheel. The ball may drop the mother, pass through an area of deflectors and fall on the wheel and into one of thirty-seven (single-zero, Frch or European roulette) or thirty-eight (double-zero, American roulette) or thirty-nine (triple- zero, “Sands Roulette”)

The first form of roulette was created in France in the 18th century. Many historians believe that Blaise Pascal introduced a primitive form of roulette in the 17th century in his search for a perpetual motion machine.

The roulette mechanism is a hybrid of a game wheel created in 1720 and the Italian game Biribi.

A primitive form of roulette, known as ‘EO’ (Ev/Odd), was played in kirtel in the late 18th century with a game wheel similar to that used in roulette.
The game has been played in its best form since as early as 1796 in Paris. An early description of the game of roulette in its current form is found in a French novel La Roulette, ou le Jour by Jacques Lablee, which describes a roulette wheel at the Palais Royal in Paris in 1796. The description included the house pockets, “There are exactly two seats reserved for the bank where it gets its only mathematical advantage.” It goes on to describe the layout with “… two slots containing the bank’s two numbers, zero and double zero”. The book was published in 1801. A possible earlier reference to a game of this name was published in the rules of New France (Québec) in 1758, which prohibited games of “dice, hoca, faro and roulette”.
The roulette wheels used in Parisian casinos in the late 1790s had red for the single zero and black for the double zero. To avoid confusion, the color gre was chosen for the zeros in roulette wheels from the 19th century.
In 1843, in the German spa casino town of Bad Homburg, fellow Frchm François and Louis Blanc introduced the only 0-style roulette wheel to compete against other casinos offering the traditional wheel with single and double zero house pockets.

In some forms of early American roulette wheels, there were the numbers 1 through 28 plus a single zero, a double zero, and an American eagle. The Eagle slot machine, a symbol of American freedom, was a house slot that gave the casino an extra edge. Soon the tradition disappeared, and then the wheel only has numbered spaces. According to Hoyle, “the single is 0, the double 0, and the eagle never exposes, but when the ball falls into one of them, the banker sweeps everything on the table, except what may happen to bet on one of them, when he pays twenty-seven for one , which is the amount paid for all amounts bet on a single number”.
During the 19th century, roulette spread throughout Europe and the United States and became one of the most famous and popular casino games. When the German government abolished gambling in the 1860s, the Blanc family moved to the last remaining legal casino operation in Europe in Monte Carlo, where they established a gambling mecca for Europe’s elite. It was here that the single zero roulette wheel became the main game, and over the years it was exported all over the world, except in the United States, where the double zero wheel had remained dominant.
