The Horseshoe Las Vegas is a casino hotel on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. It is owned and operated by Caesars tertainmt. It originally opened on December 4, 1973 as the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. The 26-story hotel has 2,100 rooms and is one of the largest hotels in the world.

On November 21, 1980, the MGM Grand suffered one of the deadliest high-rise fires in American history, killing 85 people. The MGM Grand was rebuilt at a cost of $50 million and finally reopened on July 29, 1981 with new fire safety features. Another 26-story tower opened later that year, with more than 700 rooms. Bally’s To Undergo Renovations, Become Horseshoe Las Vegas Casino
In 1986, Bally Manufacturing bought the resort and rammed Bally’s Las Vegas. A sister property, Paris Las Vegas, opened in 1999 next to Bally’s. An outdoor mall, Grand Bazaar Shops, was added to Bally’s in 2015. The resort has long been home to Jubilee! A theatrical show, it ran from 1981 to 2016.
After the renovation, Caesars Entertainment rebranded the property as Horseshoe Las Vegas on December 15, 2022. It is named after the original Binion’s Horseshoe Casino in downtown Las Vegas. In 2023, it was announced that the resort would lose its Jubilee Tower to the Paris Las Vegas, reducing the number of rooms at the Horseshoe.
Launched in July 1967. It was built between the Three Coins and the Galaxy Motel, both of which served as Bonanza’s residences.
The casino is known for its country music acts and singer Buck Oves made his debut on the Las Vegas Strip in 1969.

However, that did not materialize. In 1970, Kerkorian filed foreclosure against the owners and regained control of Bonanza.
Kerkorian’s company, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), purchased Bonanza and adjacent land in December 1971. MGM planned to build a resort complex on the property called the MGM Grand Hotel, after the 1932 MGM film Grand Hotel.
The MGM Grand Hotel had a modest opening on December 4, 1973. The following night there was a grand opening ceremony with celebrity appearances.
The MGM Grand was designed by architect Martin Stern Jr. and was considered luxurious. It has hundreds of chandeliers and marble statues and columns.

The design of the resort was modeled after the grand hotels common in Europe in the early 20th century.
A few days after the opening, character actor Chill Wills became the first person to get married at the new resort.
And within weeks of opening, it was announced that completing the resort would increase the $106 million cost by another $20 million.
On November 21, 1980, a fire broke out in the MGM Grand Casino restaurant. It was one of the deadliest fires in US history, killing 85 people.

Smoke billowed into the hotel tower, killing many of the victims. The fire had such an impact on hotel safety that it led to the implementation of fire safety improvements around the world.
The resort was temporarily closed due to the fire. State gaming reviews were hurt by the closing, as MGM was one of the largest tax contributors to the local gaming industry.
Over the next eight months, other MGM Grand facilities were remodeled at a cost of $50 million, which included the implementation of new fire safety features.
The MGM Grand held a soft reopening on July 29, 1981, followed by an official opening the following day. There are no large-scale celebrations on the two opening days.

A hotel spokesman said, “Given what happened in November, it seems inappropriate to hold a grand party.”
The sale of the two hotels was finalized in April 1986 for $550 million, and they were rebranded under the Bally brand.
In July 1986, a man secretly planted a pipe bomb in a sports book at the resort and then demanded $200,000 from the casino, threatening to detonate the bomb if the money was not received. The bomb was discovered by the authorities and they detonated it outside the resort, only to be blown up by fireworks. The man was found and arrested.
In 1991, a small fire broke out on one side of the Lizard sign along the Las Vegas Strip. Workers were replacing sign lights during the fire, which caused $250,000 in damage.

In 1993, Bally announced plans to build a new trans on a three-acre site along the Las Vegas Strip that was being used as a resort parking lot. The transfer will include moving walkways and is expected to be completed by 1994 d.
The new Trance was designed by Brad Friedmutter. Moving walkways were added due to the distance between the trans and the resort’s sidewalk along the strip.
It was launched in June 1995. It moved south from Bally’s to the new MGM Grand Resort on the Strip.
The world premiere of Star Trek: Rebellion was held on December 10, 1998 at the Resort’s Jubilee Theatre.

Bally’s sister property, Paris Las Vegas, opened in September 1999. Paris is tightly integrated with the Bally’s property by boardwalk. For many years, both resorts operated under the same gaming license.
The exterior of the Bally received a new paint job, with blue stripes added, further recalling the appearance of Paris.
Park Place began the renovation of Bally in 2000, which included the modernization of hotel rooms, casino floor, convention center and restaurants.
The sign was 150 feet tall and cost $10 million, making it the most extravagant sign on the Strip at the time of its installation. The sign has three sides, each with a large Mitsubishi diamond screed. In addition to the resort announcement, Park Place also communicated the exclusion to other advertisers.

Harrah’s considered several options for the Bally property, including flipping or ramming it. Another option is to demolish it to build a horseshoe-branded hotel;

The Bally executive said the transfer road would eventually be redeveloped, adding that “the land is too valuable to sit there, so they have to do something.”

Bally’s Steakhouse, a popular eatery, has closed to make way for a larger restaurant called BLT Steak.
In 2013, construction began on a new Bali shopping mall, Grand Bazaar, based on the market of the same name in Istanbul. Instead of a moving walkway across, an outdoor mall was built on a two-acre site along the Las Vegas Strip. Caesars leased the property to a retail developer and is also a partner in the new project.

A glass case of $10,000 bills displayed for decades at the Binion Horseshoe has been restored at the New Horseshoe.
In 2023, Caesars announced plans to add the Jubilee Tower (expanded to be moved to the Versailles Tower) and the Paris Las Vegas before the year, reducing the number of rooms at the Horseshoe.
When it opened in 1973, the MGM Grand Hotel had two large theaters: the 800-person Ziegfeld Room; and the Celebrity Room, with a capacity of 1,200 people.

Ziegfeld produced productions by renowned Las Vegas choreographer Dan Ord, including Hallelujah Hollywood, which ran until 1980.

Sergio Franchi was the first tertainer signed to star in Celebrity Room (three-year contract from February 1974).
Franchi’s frequent co-star is comedian Joan Rivers.
