Casino Royale is the twenty-first film in the James Bond series produced by Eon Productions. It served as a reboot of the series, returning its continuity to Bond’s early career as 00 and was the first to feature Daniel Craig as James Bond. The film was directed by Martin Campbell and adapted by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and Paul Haggis.

Based on Ian Fleming’s 1953 novel Casino Royale, it is the first Bond film to take its title from an Ian Fleming novel or short story since 1987’s The Living Daylights, and the first to be based directly on one of Ian Fleming’s works. Fleming since 1989’s License .to. kill (although several films since, such as the earlier Die Another Day, have incorporated some of Fleming’s story elements). It is also considered the first more or less faithful adaptation of a complete Fleming novel since 1973’s Live and Let Die, as all films in the interim either used only selected elements from Fleming’s novels or were based on short stories (needing considerable expansion) , or were original works. This film marks the third film adaptation of Casino Royale, having previously been a 1954 television episode and a 1967 feature film; however, according to EON Productions, the 2006 edition is considered the only “official” adaptation of Fleming’s novel.

In the film, Bond must defeat the criminal banker Le Chiffre in a high-stakes poker game to stop his criminal organization from funding terrorists. He is assisted by CIA agent Felix Leiter and HM Treasury liaison Vesper Lynd.
In Prague, in the Czech Republic, James Bond has tracked down the head of MI6, Dryden, who was selling secrets to enemies for profit. They discuss what it takes to be a Double-O agent (one of the requirements being two homicides) and Bond casually tells Dryden that his spy contact, Fisher, is dead and “That’s not good.” Interspersed with the conversation are black and white scenes of Bond and Dryden’s contact in the men’s room. Bond finally pushes the man’s face into the overflowing sink and holds him there until he falls to the floor, apparently dead. Dryden aims his gun at Bond. “Too bad. We just met.” He pulls the trigger, but James has removed the ammunition from the weapon. “I know where you keep your gun. I guess that’s something.” Dryden continues to taunt Bond, asking if he feels remorse or guilt for killing Fisher. Bond remains passive, expressionless. Dryden says Bond “needn’t worry, it’s another…” at which point Bond kills Dryden. Bond puts down his gun saying, “Yes, considerably.” (Though not explicitly stated, Bond found killing Dryden, his second such killing, “considerably” easier than the first.) In a flashback, Fisher recovers from Bond’s attempt to drown him and recovers his pistol. The shot currently shifts to the show’s iconic “gun barrel” sequence. Bond turns and shoots the man. Blood flows across the frame, fueling the opening credits.
The scene shifts to Uganda, where a terrorist group known as the Lord’s Resistance Army meets Le Chiffre, a private banker to terrorist groups around the world. The broker for the deal is Mr. White, who invests his own money and manipulates the stock to get 100% return on investment. The Lord’s Resistance Army, represented by a man named Steven Obanno, agrees to allow the money to be loaned to Le Chiffre for his nefarious purposes.
In Madagascar, Bond works with another MI6 agent, Carter, monitoring a terrorist, Mollak, who is betting on a fight between a cobra and a mongoose. Carter, who is inexperienced, is exposed after Mollaka receives a call on her cell phone and the terrorist flees the scene. Bond hunts down Mollaka, who is an expert “free runner”, who leads Bond through a construction site, over several cranes and finally to the Nambutu embassy where he is seeking asylum. Bond raids the embassy, in direct violation of international law and his orders, and captures Mollak. Bond makes his way through the corridors of the embassy and finds himself surrounded by armed guards. The ambassador appears and orders Bond to release Mollaka. Bond shoots Mollaka and a nearby petrol tank and flees in the explosion. He also steals the backpack that Mollaka was carrying. Searching her backpack, he finds a cell phone and a bomb. Bond flips through the man’s messages, locating one with an American phone number and the word “ellipse”. Bond holds the phone.

Back at MI6, M is furious that 007’s violent actions were filmed at the Nambutu embassy. Bond later breaks into M’s house and hacks his level one clearance so he can trace where the phone call came from. When M enters, she is surprised and teaches him proper protocol and manners. She thought it a mistake to give him the status of 00. Bond assures her that “the life expectancy of a 00 is short, so your mistake will be short-lived”. M tells him that “arrogance and self-awareness rarely go hand in hand” and wanted to take her ego out of the equation when he was on a mission. She also tells him to take a short vacation until she decides how best to deal with it. As Bond leaves, M tells Bond never to enter her house again (which she will do again in Skyfall).
Bond discovers that the call to Mollaki came from the Bahamas, so he travels there to investigate who made the call and why. Eventually he found a go-between, Alex Dimitrios, who worked for Le Chiffre and was hired to find someone who could do the job for Le Chiffre. Bond meets Dmitrios and plays poker with him, winning his Aston Martin DB5. Bond uses Aston to arrange a romantic evening with Dmitrios’ rejected wife Solange in order to get information about her husband. She tells Bond that Dmitrios is going to Miami.
Bond follows where he confronts Dimitrios, having seen him put the bag away for someone to pick it up later. Bond kills Dimitrios while he is held at knifepoint; however, the bag goes missing and Bond follows a man, Carlos Nikolic, hired for Molla’s job. Bond follows Carlos to Miami International Airport, where he takes a security uniform out of a bag and puts it on. He sneaks into the secure area of the airport and Bond follows, having figured out that the “ellipse” is the security code for getting through the gate. M calls Bond to tell him that Le Chiffre will order Carlos to destroy the prototype of the major airline Skyfleet. The prototype is the largest passenger aircraft in the world and its destruction will bankrupt Skyfleet Aeronautics. Carlos activates the building’s emergency sprinkler system to cause a detour, forcing everyone out of the airport and onto the runway. Carlos attaches an explosive charge disguised as a keychain to the fuel tank and begins driving it towards the plane. However, Bond manages to jump onto the tanker. The two have a heated argument all along the boardwalk as they are pursued by the Miami-Dade police. Finally, Carlos jumps off the lorry and Bond barely manages to stop the tanker from hitting the plane. Carlos smiles as Bond is arrested and launches the attack. However, Bond discovered Carlos’ small explosive device and attached it to Carlos’ belt during the melee, and Carlos accidentally killed himself.
Back in Nassau, Bond discovers that Solange has been killed, when MI6 finds her body drowned in a fishing boat’s net. M she explains that she was tortured and killed by Le Chiffre because she was the only one left alive and she thought she had spoken. Le Chiffre’s plan was to “short” hundreds of millions of dollars of Skyfleet stock and, by destroying their prototype, crash the stock into bankruptcy. Thanks to Bond, Le Chiffre loses over 101 million dollars. Now a scarred man, Le Chiffre must find another way to get his money back so his investors don’t kill him. He organizes a high-stakes poker game in Montenegro for ten players, with buy-ins of $10 million each plus a $5 million buyout if they lose all their money. M informs Bond of a poker game at Casino Royale located in Montenegro and agrees to let Bond continue the mission as he is the best poker player in the service. M also implants a guidance device in Bond’s left forearm so that he can follow him anywhere.
