A video of Praveen’s 45th birthday celebration at Sama Saraswati Gardens, posted on social media on July 13, shows his lavish lifestyle. He can be seen in a procession in an open jeep, surrounded by a group of beaters in black uniforms, his friends and fans sprinkling crackers, showering flower petals and greeting him with a huge garland.
The video invitation he posted describing a spectacular pool party hosted by PC (acronym for Praveen Chikoti) and his associate Madhava Reddy on June 11 and 12 in Jappa, Nepal was seen by Bollywood stars and popular models including Amisha Patel , Meghna Naidoo and Scarlett Wilson.

“He is still living in the same old flat at Sai Kiran’s residence in Saidabad’s Vinay Nagar Colony, though he has recently built a new bungalow nearby,” said Praveen Kumar, local correspondent of a local daily. He said Praveen entered the real estate business in 2004-05 and made a lot of money during the Hyderabad real estate boom of 2007-08.
“He organized festivals like Bonalu and Ganesh Chaturthi in the Saidabad area and became something of a leader of the local youth, donating money generously to festivals and local events. He also built a small Durga in Saidabad and became popular in the area,” said Kumar.
Unconfirmed reports say that Praveen also tried to enter the film industry to make quick bucks and even produced a low-budget Telugu film that bombed at the box office. He then retired from the film business, but not without getting some celebrity contacts.

As Praveen claims on social media, he has developed a passion for exotic and rare birds and animals. When forest department officials raided his farm at Sairedygudem village in Kandukur block near Kadthal in Ranga Reddy district, about 50 km from Hyderabad, they were surprised to find something like a “mini zoo” there.

The search was based on pictures of Praveen posing with some rare animals like iguanas, yellow python and red viper on his Instagram. “My iguana @ Ananthashayana,” read the caption of one of the photos of him posing with the animal.
During the investigations, in addition to dogs, cows and buffaloes, the authorities found pythons, mongooses, iguanas, lizards, ostriches, horses, swans, ducks, parrots, pigeons and rare species of large spiders.
Interestingly, the forest authorities found that Praveen had acquired them legally and with proper permits. “About 20 of them were imported from other countries. He kept them well and took good care of them. We could not find anything illegal,” said Jay Hema, deputy forest ranger of Kandukuru Mts.

According to a senior police official privy to the development, Praveen’s name came up during the ED’s investigation into the hawala network across the country in the last one year. After gathering certain information, the emergency doctor raided his house in Saidabad and his assistant Madhava Reddy’s house in Bowenpally, Hyderabad, the official said.
Police have also questioned a local travel agent, Sampat, who is believed to have arranged travel to Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia and Sri Lanka, where Praveen has been running casinos for the past year.
During the three-day investigation, the ED questioned Praveen and his aide about the pattern of payments he made to celebrities and casino players. “Players are usually given tokens that they would exchange for money at the end of the games. The ED asked him how the winners got their payments – legally or through the hawala regime, which is against the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA),” the official said.
Authorities questioned Praveen based on call recordings obtained from his cell phones and computer hard drives seized from him during the raids. Praveen submitted the bank statements to the ED authorities for verification but could not answer why there were some discrepancies in the bank statements, especially those related to the gambling party organized in Nepal and Sri Lanka.

So far, the ED authorities have not registered any case against Praveen, let alone arrested him. “However, if they find any concrete evidence against him, they will file a case against him,” said the police official quoted above.
