The $290 million property was developed by Circus Circus terprises. The castle theme was designed by company founder William Bennett, and the resort was designed by Veldon Simpson. Bnett and the design team traveled to castles across Europe for inspiration. Construction began in October 1988 and the resort opened on June 19, 1990. It was the largest hotel in the world until the nearby MGM Grand opened in 1993.
Excalibur has hosted numerous shows, including Thunder from Down Under, which was held in 2002 and is the longest-running men’s show in Las Vegas. The Tournamt of Kings, a medieval-themed extravaganza featuring sword fights and jousting, is the Strip’s longest-running dinner show.

The property was the proposed site for Xanadura, a 1,730-room resort announced in 1975. Xanadu was never built because its developers were unable to reach an agreement with the county regarding the required sewer infrastructure. .
The company organized an international competition to name the new resort. More than 180,000 attempts were made and the winning name “Excalibur” was selected from more than 33,000 names.
The Excalibur was among the new leisure-oriented megaresorts operating on the Strip, following a trend started by the Mirage in 1989.
On March 21, 2003, Josh Ford of Los Angeles hit the largest Megabucks Jackpot ever at $39.7 million on Excalibur.

The Excalibur property, along with many other MGM properties, was transferred to MGM Growth Properties in 2016, while MGM Resorts continued to operate it under a lease.
Bennett studied old castle designs, and he and Simpson visited castle sites in Gland and Germany for design inspiration.
The company did library research on castles and visited such buildings as well as film studios in Europe. According to Yates-Silverman design director Michael Erickson: “Basically, we were looking for the same level of design that you would find in film. If you were to design the rooms as they literally looked in the old days, they would be dark, dirty and dirty. You have to romanticize it a bit and take a more theatrical approach.’

The hotel’s remodeling project began in 2006 and was scheduled to be completed four years later. In line with guest feedback, the multi-phase project removed castle-themed elements from the rooms in favor of a low-key design.
In 2008, Excalibur eliminated live poker dealers and replaced them with automated tables manufactured by Pokertek in a 10-month transaction. The new tables primarily attracted the lower-paying climate and beginners, and the resort encouraged a return to live poker, which was favored by experienced players willing to give more.
At the opening, Bennett described Excalibur as an upgrade to the Circus Circus resort in Las Vegas, still targeting the same family demographic.
Family attractions included an arcade, a medieval-themed indoor area and motion simulator rides in two 48-seat theaters.

South of Excalibur are two other MGM properties, Luxor and Mandalay Bay. The three resorts are connected by the Mandalay Bay Tramway.
In 1997, the resort added the Zagat Award-winning Camelot Steakhouse.
In 1998, Excalibur announced a partnership with World Championship Wrestling to operate a wrestling-themed restaurant at the resort.
The $2 million WCW Nitro Grill opened in May 1999 and ran for 16 months, with regular appearances by professional wrestlers at the time.

Because Excalibur had an exclusive deal with Pepsi, the grocery store was one of the few McDonald’s in the world to sell the soft drink, rather than its competitor Coca-Cola. McDonald’s finally closed in 2016.
Excalibur has presented two medieval shows since its launch, both in a 900-seat dinner theater. Jousting was a feature of both shows.
A Family Favorite In Las Vegas
The show closed in January 1999 after approximately 5,600 performances. A month later, it was replaced by a revamped version known as the Tournamt of the Kings.
Both shows were created by Frch-born producer Peter Jackson, who died shortly before the release of Tournamt of Kings. He took over his son Patrick Jackson as producer.
As of 2008, the actor had 38 people and 11 horses. The show had a total of 30 horses, housed in an air-conditioned facility at the back of the resort.
The King Arthur’s Tournamt has featured female riders, although it wasn’t until 2014 that the King’s Tournamt had its first female rider.

In 1993, the resort debuted a three-story animatronic dragon as part of a show that pitted it against a mechanical statue of Merlin. The show took place in the moat and was performed every night at the same time.
The effects of the dragon and Merlin were generally considered uncomfortable. In 2002 and 2003, Las Vegas Review-Journal readers named the show the worst attraction in the city.
Thunder Down Under opened at the resort in July 2002 and is the longest running men’s magazine in Las Vegas.
Since 2011, Thunder from Down Under vue has also hosted The Australian Bee Gees Show, a tribute to the original Bee Gees.
The Buffet At Excalibur Review
Vue originally had 375 people. It was rotated in 2019 and renamed the Thunderland Showroom, expanding the seats to 425. Magician Hans Klok began performing that same year, sharing Thunder from Down Under and the Bee Gees.
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Klo left the property in 2020, fearing that pandemic restrictions would hamper the magazine.
Other shows at the resort included the Royal Lipizzaner Stallions, a group of Lipizzaner horses that performed various maneuvers for spectators in the 1990s.
Catch a Rising Star, a chain of comedy clubs, opened a location in Excalibur in 2001 and operated there for almost three years. The club was added in response to guest feedback.
