The $290 million property was developed by Circus Circus terprises. The castle theme was designed by company founder William Bennett, and the resort was designed by Veldon Simpson. Bnett and the design team traveled to castles across Europe for inspiration. Construction began in October 1988 and the resort opened on June 19, 1990. It was the largest hotel in the world until the nearby MGM Grand opened in 1993.

Excalibur has hosted numerous shows, including Thunder from Down Under, which was held in 2002 and is the longest-running men’s show in Las Vegas. The Tournamt of Kings, a medieval-themed extravaganza featuring sword fights and jousting, is the Strip’s longest-running dinner show.

The property was the proposed site for Xanadura, a 1,730-room resort announced in 1975. Xanadu was never built because its developers were unable to reach an agreement with the county regarding the required sewer infrastructure. .

The company organized an international competition to name the new resort. More than 180,000 attempts were made and the winning name “Excalibur” was selected from more than 33,000 names.

The Excalibur was among the new leisure-oriented megaresorts operating on the Strip, following a trend started by the Mirage in 1989.

On March 21, 2003, Josh Ford of Los Angeles hit the largest Megabucks Jackpot ever at $39.7 million on Excalibur.

The Excalibur property, along with many other MGM properties, was transferred to MGM Growth Properties in 2016, while MGM Resorts continued to operate it under a lease.

Bennett studied old castle designs, and he and Simpson visited castle sites in Gland and Germany for design inspiration.

The company did library research on castles and visited such buildings as well as film studios in Europe.
